DEPARTMENT OF TRAUMATOLOGY-ORTHOPEDICS, FIELD SURGERY AND NEUROSURGERY
Established in 1920
In 1926 into the curriculum was introduced the subjects of Traumatology and Orthopedics with bone tuberculosis, teach by M.S.Astrov and course of Desmurgy teach by senior teacher V.A.Dobrokhodov.
In 1930 in the republic was opened first hospital of Orthopedics with 30 beds. In 1935-1938 I.M.Chizhin were headed the hospital. From 1935 to 1938 the Course of Traumatology and Bone tuberculosis headed by professor S.F.Koufman, the author of 150 scientific works. He headed the Institute of traumatology and orthopedics established in Uzbekistan in 1931.
Boris Isaevich Berliner was head of Department since 1957 to 1962. Under his advice was defended 14 philosophy doctorate and two science doctorate dissertations. Author of 90 scientific works, from them 5 monographies.
In 1962-1971 head of department of Traumatology and Orthopedics became the candidate of medical sciences, associate professor V.A.Sorokina.
In Uzbekistan department originally situated at Traumatology and Orthopedics research institute and later received its own clinical base in the 14th municipal hospital with 80 beds, later in the Traumatology department of the Clinical emergency hospital with 60 beds and since 1967 in the Traumatology department of the 6th municipal hospital.

Kariev Marat Khikmatovich headed department from 1971 to 1997. He was the president of the Neurosurgeons Scientific Society in Uzbekistan. He is the founder of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Neurosurgery. In 1971, the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Military Field Surgery was organized by merging the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and detached courses of Field surgery. The doctor of Medical Sciences M.Kh. Kariev was elected as head of the department.
In 1979, the department was divided into the newly organized Department of Neurosurgery, the organizer and the first head of the department was Professor M.Kh.Kariev and Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, where head of department from 1980 to 1983 was prof. M.D. Dusmuratov. From 1984 to 1990 the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics is headed by professor Sh.Sh.Khamraev. |

Iskandar Yunusovich Khodjanov since 2004 headed department of Traumatology-Orthopedics and Field surgery 1-st Tashkent State Medical Institute, and further from 2005 to 2011 headed department of Traumatology-Orthopedics, Field surgery and Neurosurgery TMA.
In present time the head of the Department of Pediatric Trauma and Deformities of the Thorax and Spine Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics. |

Currently, the department has clinical departments, including departments of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Neurosurgery, the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, the Republican Scientific Center for Pediatric Orthopedics and the Multidisciplinary Clinic of the Center for Advanced Training of Medical Workers, equipped with modern equipment and staffed with qualified personnel.
In the history of teaching traumatology and orthopedics, the best period is the open departments of traumatology-orthopedics, military field surgery and neurosurgery. In this period, in the Department of Traumatology-Orthopedics, Military Field Surgery and Neurosurgery, all the hours worked are distributed in one department, on the basis of specialized curricula, it is directed to the training of medical and dental faculties.
Methodological recommendations have been developed for conducting practical classes and lectures, taking into account the specific conditions of Uzbekistan.
In addition to teaching the basics of traumatology, orthopedics, military field surgery and neurosurgery, the department trains qualified traumatologists, orthopedists, surgeons and neurosurgeons throughout the year. Numerous active doctors from all cities of Uzbekistan and neighboring republics have been trained at the department.
The research work of the staff of the department is connected with the most pressing issues of traumatology, orthopedics, military field surgery and neurosurgery and develops certain areas of previous years.
In the course of the study, important practical information of great scientific and practical importance was obtained.
From 1980 to 1990, employees published 7 monographies, and after the creation of the department – 21 monographs.
The total number of works published by the staff of the department exceeds 500, of which 171 were written in 1980-1990. During this period, 21 methodological recommendations and 40 rationalization proposals were published.

Students also participate in scientific research at the department. Over the past 20 years, since the foundation of the club, more than 70 reports have been presented at student scientific conferences. Students continue their scientific activities at the department after graduation. Many members of the scientific community will reach the level of researchers in the future.
The staff of the department made a significant contribution to the training of traumatologists, surgeons, neurosurgeons and the provision of specialized care to the population.
Currently, trained specialists at the department carry out their activities in all regions of the republic.
Currently, the name of the research work of the department is “Development and implementation of new effective methods for diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases of the musculoskeletal system and neurosurgical diseases in the country, taking into account all epidemiological conditions.”
